Stormy Seas on his canvas in Britannia Bay – Pienaar van Niekerk
Pienaar van Niekerk’s recent exhibition opening at the Koelkamers Teater on March 12th provided an opportunity for art enthusiasts to view his latest works. The event produced lively and engaging conversations among guests about the pieces on display.
Van Niekerk discussed his artistic philosophy, explaining his use of basic shapes, with a particular focus on the triangle, within his abstract and retro realism style. He traced his artistic development, starting with studies under Erik Laubscher and continuing through his formal education at Stellenbosch University.
He shared how his art has evolved over time, noting his enduring connection to nature. Recent works reflect his exploration of personal experiences, cultural heritage, and the relationship between language and socio-political contexts. A notable piece, “Visserskuite in stormagtige see” (“Fishing boats in a stormy sea”), illustrates his fascination with the sea and its dynamic nature.
Van Niekerk expressed his commitment to his artistic practice and his goal of promoting the Sandpiper Art Gallery in Britannia Bay. The gallery acts as a space for his artwork.
If you are interested in viewing Pienaar van Niekerk’s work, the Sandpiper Art Gallery is open to visitors by appointment.
